My name is David McArdle and I am a Physics/ Applied Mathematics/ and Secondary Education major at the University of Rhode Island. I intend to become a high school Physics and Mathematics teacher in 2012. I have always had a passion for mathematics and I thoroughly enjoy the subject of physics so I can't wait to spread my passion for these subjects to my future students. I will be performing my student teaching experience at Westerly High School in the spring. Beyond my academic interests, which I have already detailed, I am interested in several different sports. Primarily, I love cycling. I enjoy both road biking and mountain biking and I spend a significant amount of my free time with my friends cycling. My favorite place to mountain bike is Big River Management Area in East Greenwich. I also enjoy running and swimming and I am training for a Half-Ironman triathlon in August!
The unit that I have developed for this particular course is a Projectile Motion unit. This unit will introduce students to the ideas and concepts that are central to 2D kinematics. They will be introduced to the "bullet shot/ bullet dropped" theory and will learn that the motion of an object in the x direction is entirely independent of the motion of the object in the y direction. They will also learn how to extend their knowledge of 1D kinematics in order to solve 2D kinematics problems. Students will also be exposed to real world applications of kinematics through the completion of several inquiry based activities and investigations that allow for hands-on and cooperative learning. The link to the wikipage for this unit can be accessed through the above link.
